Do You Even Lift Bro?

Umm, sometimes. Like once every couple of months or so. That counts right?

I’m not your “I-LOVE-to-work-out” kinda girl. I’m more of the “I’ll-go-to-the-gym-here-and-there-consistently-and-then-stop” kinda girl. It’s the going and then not going for a while I’m consistent about. I don’t have the fastest metabolism either. I feel like if I just smell a donut, I’ll gain 10 pounds. I’m also always mentioning how I want to look and feel better, but of course I don’t really make a strong effort to make that change.

Over the years, my girls have invited me to so many free workout classes. I declined every. single. time. Why? Like I said, I’m not someone that enjoys working out or the burn during it. My favorite part of working out is being done.

Love Is Good for the Heart, But Bad for the Waistline

That being said, I gained 20 pounds two years ago from dating an ex boyfriend (that love weight is a bitch). I thought I could eat what he ate. WRONG. I have no chill when it comes to pizza, fries, and my ultimate kryptonite: Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. I’ve been managing these 20 pounds with moderate denial.

That’s until I went to the doctor recently for a checkup. I stepped on the scale and couldn’t believe it. I had gained a total of 30 pounds. My heart sank and it became all too real. I could either accept my weight gain or make a change.

I want to emphasize that I don’t think one should live her/his life ruled by being a “certain” weight. If I had gotten on the scale and saw I had gained 30 pounds but knew it was muscle weight, I wouldn’t have been phased — but this was not the case. This was 30 pounds of poor eating and drinking weight.

About Damn Time

One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Seeing I hadn’t made much progress in two years, I decided to sign up for Class Pass — something my girls (especially Nikki and Amy) have been raving about. They would always mention how much fun they had taking different classes and how motivating it was to be in a class working out with peers versus doing it solo in the gym.

I downloaded the app and signed up for my free 2-week trial. I took my first class on July 31st at 9:00 am with Amy. We did “The Mashup” class at Fitmix Studio on La Brea. It’s a running/Pilates/strength training class. The running part almost killed me but I stuck with it. The Pilates… I loved! I definitely wanted to do more Pilates after that first class! Overall, I had a great workout and my friends were right: classes are way more fun and a great way to change things up in your workout routine.

Don’t Stop, Won’t Stop

Lobby of Carrie’s Pilates Plus

The following week I tried my very first Pilates class BY MYSELF (whatttt?! crazy I know) at Carrie’s Pilates Plus. I loved it! I started sweating profusely within the first three minutes of the class. It was so so so good. I felt every butt muscle after the workout and pretty much during. It was a game changer. Also, I must say Charity Hodges did such a great job instructing the class and making a newbie like me feel comfortable. I really appreciated that!

The week after (yes, believe it), I went with Nikki to Carrie’s Pilates Plus again. This was our first time working out together and I enjoyed being able to work out with the Class Pass queen. A little backstory, Nikki is an attorney and more specifically she is a Senior Content and Programming Manager on the PPV/VOD team for AT&T’s in Entertainment Group. Translation: full time job but still makes the time to work out 4-5 times a week. How she finds the energy after work? No clue. But nonetheless, I’m inspired by her discipline. You make time for the things you care about right?

Soooo, I officially became a Class Pass member! I’m going to try to make a consistent effort to work out. Lets see how this goes.
